TECHNIQUE BREAKDOWN

Hip Hop has a rich history, influenced by styles such as Grooving, Breaking, Botting, and more. While I teach a variety of techniques, I emphasize what I call The Big 3: Waving, Popping, and Tutting, as a way to introduce the styles to levels from beginners to advanced.

  • WAVING

Enhances body control to create the illusions of fluidity and animated movements.

  • POPPING

One of the oldest foundational styles that build powerful movements, mind-muscle connection, and body control.

  • TUTTING

A more modern style that refines hand-eye coordination with the use of lines and shapes.

OTHER TECHNIQUES

  • GROOVING

A foundational element in Hip Hop, that builds synchronization and musical connectivity.

  • HOUSE

One of the oldest styles, it focuses on steps and patterns and enhances lower-body coordination.

  • BREAKING

One of the oldest foundational styles that challenges your strength, flexibility, and balance.

Don’t know where to start?

We can tailor a customized combination to suit your students' specific needs and proficiency levels.

TESTIMONIAL

DANCER | TEACHER | CHOREOGRAPHER

Meet Q Harper, founder and lead instructor at Dancers Dojo

My life’s pretty cool. Not only do I get to make a career out of dancing and creating, but as a teacher, I get to inspire and help my students cultivate dreams of their own.

During the last 15 years as a professional, I've performed around the country, competed on a dance competition show (MTV’s Americas Best Dance Crew), and collaborated with amazing dancers of many different styles.

When I started to teach, I admit I wasn’t the best. I taught too many techniques at once and classes were often overwhelming and frustrating. I needed to develop my skills as a teacher to connect, explain, and create a class environment that left us all excited to come back next week.

Now, 10 years later, I've developed a unique teaching style that helps students retain techniques and build confidence and skills they can apply on and off the stage. I try to teach my students to work hard, be proud of their progress over perfection, and encourage each other as they work as a team. And ultimately, to inspire anyone, no matter their level, to love dance.

  • During my years as a professional, I've worked on many projects like music videos, stage performances, TV productions, and more. Here is a small list of my favorite projects.

    The Orange Group

Created choreography for music videos and served as the art director on several video shoots. As well as choreographed and performed at the annual "The Orange Conference" in Atlanta, GA.

Jack and Jill of America Inc. Atlanta Chapter Step Team

Collaborated with the team on choreography that fused hip-hop with stepping, which helped them win first place at the National Step League.

    Atlanta Hawks

Performed during the half-time shows as a member of the "Fly Guys" Dance Team.

MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” Competed as a contestant in season 5 as a member of Royal Flush Dance Crew.

My Teaching Methodology

Hip Hop dance has fundamental techniques that shape the style. However, some Hip Hop instructors only teach their choreography.

In contrast, I teach my students skills and mindsets that can be applied in other disciplines while fostering an ability to express their unique individuality. In the end, my students can do more than just dance like me; they are equipped with skills they can utilize on their journey as dancers, creators, and performers."

3 main elements of a “Q” class

  • STRUCTURE

Inspired by ballet, fundamental techniques are taught through drills.

  • COMMUNITY

Class is a safe space to try and fail, learn through experience, and come together in support.

  • CREATIVITY

To encourage the fun, creative, and experimental aspects of Hip Hop.

How ballet dancers benefit from hip hop training

Cross-training in Hip Hop, even without pursuing it as a primary genre, offers valuable skills. By incorporating Hip Hop techniques into their training regimen, ballet dancers become more well-rounded performers, enhancing their versatility and adaptability on stage.

The fusion skills equip dancers with a broader repertoire, making them more appealing to commercial opportunities in the dance industry. Whether performing in musical theater productions, music videos, or commercial gigs, dancers with a foundation in ballet and hip-hop possess a unique edge, blending grace and precision with power and creativity.

FAQS

  • Our workshop spans 4 days, allowing ample time to learn 3 techniques, master a choreography piece, and film our final class video on the last day.

While it's ideal to schedule the workshop days consecutively for better retention, we can also split the sessions over a week or two, accommodating multiple groups or scheduling conflicts.

Share your scheduling constraints and studio requirements with us, and we'll collaborate to find the optimal solution.

  • To better accommodate the diverse needs of the studios we partner with, we organize our workshops into seasons. Below, you'll find the date ranges for each group. Reach out to us to secure your preferred dates as they go fast!

    Spring: April-May

    Summer: June-August

    Fall: September-November

  • We provide the flexibility to accommodate up to two distinct class groups for each package, allowing students of varying ages and skill levels to participate. How you choose to divide the classes is entirely up to you. While many studios opt for a beginner and an intermediate/advanced grouping, you may prefer to organize them by age or have all students learn together. The choice is yours, tailored to what best suits your students.

Should you require additional groupings, simply let us know, and we can add them for a discounted fee.

  • We prioritize the skill level of students over strict age requirements. While we typically find that students under the age of 7/8 may encounter challenges with focus, coordination, and required skills, we remain open to discussing opportunities for younger students who demonstrate exceptional abilities. If your studio has talented younger students, we're eager to explore how they can benefit from our program.

  • While our workshop is open to all, we primarily target company dancers due to the high level of skill, focus, and dedication required to excel in a masterclass environment. However, if you prefer to extend the workshop to your entire studio, we're more than happy to accommodate. Simply inform us in advance so we can adequately prepare for the number of students in each class.

  • Our Pop-Up Class offers a quick and immersive experience, perfect for those looking to dive into a specific technique and choreography in just one day. During the 1.5-hour session, students focus on one technique and learning a corresponding choreography piece, making it ideal for those seeking a brief yet impactful dance experience.

On the other hand, our Workshop is designed as a comprehensive master class, offering a deeper exploration of multiple techniques over an extended period. With a total of 6 hours of class time spread across multiple sessions, students have the opportunity to delve into three distinct techniques and corresponding choreography pieces. This format allows for a more in-depth learning experience, fostering skill development and artistic growth.

Whether you're looking for a quick introduction or a deep dive into the world of dance, we have options to suit your needs. Explore our offerings and discover the perfect fit for your dance journey!

  • During the video shoot, students are encouraged to exude confidence and showcase their newfound skills. We suggest they dress in appropriate streetwear to express their individuality, with some classes opting to coordinate color schemes while others prefer diverse styles. Our aim is to create a professional and enjoyable experience akin to a real video shoot.

The shoot will occur during the final segment of the workshop's last day, ensuring an inviting atmosphere where participation is optional. Students not wishing to partake will be welcomed as part of the "support team" to prevent anyone from feeling excluded.

Parental consent via a video release form is mandatory, and the final video will be sent to the studio for distribution to the students. They are then free to share it with family and friends, and your studio is granted permission to showcase the video on your website and social media platforms.

  • Dancers Dojo is an online course offering an array of drills and classes covering techniques such as Tutting, Waving, Popping, Grooving, Isolation, Botting, Breaking, and more. New classes are added monthly, ensuring a dynamic and evolving learning experience.

Upon completion of the workshop, we will provide the studio with a unique code for each student's parent, granting access to a complimentary 1-month trial of The Dancers Dojo. After the trial period, parents can opt to continue membership at a discounted rate, entirely at their discretion.

  • Our media kit is crafted to simplify your marketing. You'll receive print-ready flyers and digital designs along with engaging post copy.
